A Thousand Spendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
I read this book when it first came out and enjoyed it even more than The Kite Runner. I was prompted to write about it today as there is discussion in the news of a law being processed in Afghanistan which would, in contravention of the country's constitution, reduce the rights of women. A book like this reminds us how poorly women rate in many parts of the world.

Thousand Splendid Suns is one of your choices for 12th Grade summer reading in Summer 2009. Yes, it is four times as long as the Time Machine, but it is infinitely more readabl.
This story is swamped with secrets, as Rasheed questions if his new daughter is his own or Taria's. Mariam and Laila develop a close mother-daughter bond as they are used to the whims of their husband. Liala gives her daughter the name Aziza, meaning "cherished one". The baby symbolizes Laila's sweet memories of the love of Taria. Her strong-willed nature helps her keep these memories and secrets from Rasheed, and she soon finds the strength to stand up against Rasheed.
